Three Fun Facts You Should Know About House Painting

We all need to keep our homes looking good. This not only benefits you in the long term in terms of the value of your home; it also is a matter of personal pride. For many people, much of the appearance of a home is dependent on exterior and interior painting. Many companies offer both residential exterior painting and interior painting, but you need to be careful about choosing a company to work with. Not all painting service providers are equal, and historically different types of paint and painting techniques have yielded different results. Doing your research is key to being a responsible homeowner, which is why we're looking into some of the different factors that homeowners should know about paint before choosing a company to work with for residential exterior painting or residential interior painting.

1. Your Home May Still Have Lead Paint

At this point, most of us know that lead is toxic. If ingested in any way, whether through the mouth or through breathing in fumes, it can cause brain damage as well as other health issues. Today, interior and exterior paints no longer contain lead. This is due to a ban the government enacted in 1978. However, most homes that were built prior to that year still have lead paint somewhere within them. How many homes does that actually equal? Roughly 57 million, in fact. Therefore, you need to be careful about what you're doing regarding lead paint, and if your home is older seems if you have had it removed and replaced with non-toxic paint. This will not only make your home safer and healthier but also change its overall value. If you can't remove the paint, however, there is also the option of wiping down your surface walls regularly, while also mopping and dusting in order to prevent the inhalation of lead dust.

2. A Red Door Has Meaning

Over the years, red doors have had multiple different meanings throughout various cultures. It's become a highly symbolic part of residential exterior painting. Back during the pioneer era, a red door was symbolic of a house being a safe place for people to stop during their travels. Many people were constantly traveling throughout the pioneer era, so seeing that red door let people know that they had somewhere to sleep for the night. Moving on to the Civil War era, slaves running away would be able to look at a red door and understand that it meant that they were safe resting in that particular home. But a red door isn't just symbolic within the United States. In Scotland, a home with a red door was a mortgage free home, making the red door something of a celebratory gesture. Whereas in China, red is typically symbolic of good luck, and many people historically liked to paint their doors red for luck. Residential painting, therefore, is about more than creating a look for a house, but also, in some cases, sending a symbolic gesture.

3. Certain Colors Raise A Home's Value

So, how can different shades of paint raise the value of a home? Let's find out. For example, when a bathroom is painted powder blue or periwinkle blue, a home's overall value can be raised by as much as $5,000. Compared to a white or off-white bathroom, bathrooms of this color are simply considered more appealing and therefore add more value. In addition, houses with blue kitchens are typically more valuable than houses with yellow kitchens, and brown living rooms can actually up the value of a home a good bit. If you're flipping a house or planning on selling your home in the near future, you should really think about the paint colors that you choose in terms of what other people will like, rather than what you like alone.

Clearly, you need to put a good deal of thought into residential exterior painting and interior painting. It can affect not only the value of your home, but the safety and comfort it projects as well. Choose carefully, and furthermore choose a painting company that will work to give you what you want and need.
